Scholarships of up to $10,000, or $2,500 annually, will be awarded to each of the top two applicants. The scholarship additionally provides professional mentorship to guide recipients in becoming a journalist and a chance to secure a paid summer internship with The Press Democrat or a partnering publication. Are you the future of journalism? The Press Democrat Journalism Trust is looking for aspiring journalism students entering or currently enrolled at an accredited institution to apply for our Norma & Evert Persons’ Journalism Scholarship! The scholarship, running since 2020, is aimed at supporting the next generation of journalists through financial aid, mentorship, and summer internship opportunities. Two of the most qualified students will each be awarded up to $10,000 over four years, or $2,5000 annually. Applications are open until Friday, May 3rd. Qualifying majors include (but are not limited to): Journalism, Communications, Photojournalism, English/Language, and Writing. Last night The Press Democrat and Northern California Public Media hosted author and journalist Katherine Corcoran to discuss democracy and the critical role played by a free press and local journalism in our society. This was the first of three planned events for this election year focusing on media literacy, trustworthy journalism and the importance of a free press. https://lnkd.in/en8pUnQy

We still have a couple of tickets left for this event PD-sponsored event Wednesday night. First in our new community series: Trust & Democracy: Journalist and author Katherine Corcoran will speak on the importance of a free press in a free society Wednesday evening as the inaugural speaker in The Press Democrat’s Trust and Democracy series. The series is designed to raise awareness about the role of journalism in preserving and protecting democracy. Proceeds benefit The Press Democrat Journalism Trust, a nonprofit organization that promotes independent and sustainable local journalism. Corcoran spent five years with the Associated Press in Mexico, leading a team of journalists who were the first to interview illegal poppy growers amid the heroin explosion. From 2010-2015, while she spearheaded the team as bureau chief for Mexico and Central America, she oversaw a series of investigations into the Mexican government’s targeted violence against the press, which appeared to have been covered up by the government. The latter was a yearslong effort that culminated in Corcoran’s first book, “In the Mouth of the Wolf,” the story of a Mexican journalist who was murdered after reporting on government corruption and human rights abuses.
